This little booklet is full of fascinating information about Salcombe,
the southernmost town in Devon, and a world-famous sailing centre. Set
in an area of unspoilt natural beauty, it is surrounded by green
rolling hills, which drop steeply down to its magnificent estuary.
Nearby are enormous and spectacular sea cliffs: a natural sheltered
harbour with safe sandy coves, it is a Devonshire paradise. But there
are those who came here in the past who may not have shared this
opinion… four hundred years ago Salcombe was very different to the
resort we see today; a report of the Quarter Sessions in 1607 singled
it out as being "full of dissolute seafaring men, who murdered each
other and buried them in the sands by night"!
