Whilst I
was growing up in Totnes in the 1950s and 1960s, post-war Britain was
starting to push out its ‘green shoots’ of newly found freedom, and a
fresh era was gaining momentum. Traces of another world still remained
– cod liver oil and orange juice issues were still obtained at the
Ambulance Hall – but a different brush was painting new hues among the
fading black and white pictures of a country that still bore traces of
the past conflict.
Although filled with personal memories, this little book aims to
portray what the town of Totnes was like through that time of change.
Featured in these pages are many familiar places and faces from that
era; some are still around, but, sadly, many have gone.
