Chips
Barber was the founder of Obelisk Publications, and a well-respected
Devonshire author and publisher for over 20 years. He wrote his first book Around and About the Haldon Hills
in his spare time, while teaching at Vincent
Thompson (now St Luke's) High School in Exeter. One success led to
another, and he was eventually able to give up the day job to pursue
his love of writing full-time. He went on to write over 150
Devon titles, while giving an opening to many other local authors,
whose work has been published as part of Obelisk's popular series.
Sadly, Chips passed away suddenly on the evening of Monday 28
February 2005, at his home in Pinhoe. He is, and always will be, greatly
missed by his family, friends, and people all over the county who knew
him through his books, talks, radio interviews, walks, and other
associations with Devon. His books are still
widely regarded as some of the best and most informative about Devon
life; his wife, daughter, and son-in-law intend to keep his legacy
alive by continuing to supply his entertaining and hugely popular local
books to anyone with an interest in the area.
