This book is not meant to be a definitive guide to Dartmoor's passenger
railways, but just a brief and light-hearted encounter with them. It
attempts to be a brief look at railways on and around Dartmoor, to see
their characteristics and peculiarities, to understand how the
topography of the moor affected them and to conclude what their roles
were in that ever-turning wheel we call social history. Several
contemporary extracts from newspaper articles, about their genesis or
exodus, have been included to show how they were welcomed, or how
enthusiasts said their "goodbyes" to them.
